BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan College/Premier Bank Student-Athletes of the Week for Feb. 2-8 are men’s basketball player Chris Dewberry and women’s track & field athlete Lauren Cvechko.
Dewberry, a 6-1 175-pound junior guard from Detroit, Mich., came up big for his teammates during the week in which the Bobcats went 2-1.
In the three game stretch, Dewberry averaged 16.3 points per game. His strongest performance came on the road on Feb. 7 against West Virginia State where he scored a game high 25 points, while also contributing with six rebounds and five assists.
In a loss against Shepherd on Feb. 2, Dewberry rallied the Bobcats back after being down by double digits by going four of four from three-point land.
The Bobcats will be back action Thursday, Feb. 12 when they take on Notre Dame College on the road.
Cvechko, a sophomore from Buckhannon, W. Va., broke her own indoor record in the pentathlon with 3176 points at the Spire NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Challenge on Feb. 7. Her previous record was 3059 points.
"It was a workmanlike performance for Lauren...besides the shot put, she did not post personal bests in any event," remarked head coach Jesse Skiles. "But she did give a solid effort in each, and kept her head as she went from event to event. She is much more mature this year in her approach as a multi, and I think her and Amber work well together. That is a blessing to have a group of multis on the same page.
The women’s track & field team will travel to Tiffin University on Feb. 14 for their next indoor meet.
