BRIDGEPORT -- West Virginia State's Trenton Porter has been named Mountain East Conference Player of the Week, while West Virginia Wesleyan's Riley Metz has earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
Porter, a junior outfielder from Ona, W.Va., hit .536 (15-for-28) as the Yellow Jackets went 6-2 last week and moved into second place in the conference standings. Porter had five extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs, and scored eight times while driving in five. He had a hit in six of the eight games, and had two four-hit games during that span.
Metz, a sophomore from Hurricane, W.Va., pitched a pair of complete games and went 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA last week for the Bobcats. Against West Virginia State he allowed just three hits and one walk in a complete-game shutout. He followed that up with another complete game scattering eight hits and striking out five in a 6-4 win for WVWC.
Other Top Performances: Spencer Wolfe (SU) hit .421 and drove in eight in a 4-2 week ... Zach Sanford (GSC) hit .500 and drove in 14 in a 3-1 week for the Pioneers ... Bill Steven (Wise) hit .542 (13-for-24) and drove in five as the Cavs went 3-3 ... Jordan Meyer (WLU) had four doubles and hit .368 in six games ... Josh Wine (FSU) hit .588 and scored four times in six games ... Jerrod Groves (CU) hit .625 (10-for-16) and had a career-high five RBI vs. West Virginia Wesleyan ... Bryan Blondeauz (NDC) went 6-for-15 in six games ... Michael Logsdon (WVWC) batted .423 with a home run and three doubles for the Bobcats.
Other Top Pitching Performances: Austin Mace (UU) went 2-0 and fanned 15 batters ... Eric Roberts (WVSU) pitched a two-hit, complete-game shutout against Notre Dame ... Sam Crater (SU) went 2-0 and allowed just one earned run in 10 innings of work ... Jared Finch (Wise) had a two-hit shutout vs. Charleston ... Greg Stagnani (WLU) surrendered just two runs on five hits in a win over Shepherd ... Justin Fritts (WJU) scattered five hits and struck out eight in a win against Fairmont State ... Chris Kelly (CU) picked up his team-leading sixth win allowing two earned runs in a win over West Virginia Wesleyan ... Zach Gresch (NDC) went seven innings and gave up just one run in a no-decision.
