Wesleyan Sweeps Chestnut Hill in Baseball Doubleheader

WINTER HAVEN (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats baseball program ran their winning streak to four games as they picked up a doubleheader sweep today against the Chestnut Hill Griffins on their spring break trip to Florida.

The 'Cats defeated the Griffins in game one by an 9-5 score and took the second outing by a 9-7 count.

Wesleyan now owns a 6-4 record.

The Bobcats collected 16 hits in the opener.

The Bobcats scored first in the opening inning when John Koon hit a ground out that scored Alex Skinner.

Wesleyan made it 2-0 when Tre Kerns hit a triple and scored on a ground out by Antonio Vega in the top of the second.

The 'Cats picked up a pair of runs in the top of the third.

Greg Smith started the inning with a triple and scored on a Koon single to right field.

A Michael Logsdon single moved Koon to second base and Koon scored on a double by Corey Lynn.

Chestnut Hill scored two runs in their half of the third and one more in the fourth to make it a 4-3 game.

Lynn singled home Smith in the top of the sixth to increase the Wesleyan lead to 5-3.

Koon hit a two-run single and Logsdon had a one-run double in the top of the seventh to up their lead to 8-3.

Chestnut Hill chased across two run in the bottom of the ninth but Wesleyan prevailed with the 9-5 victory.

Smith and Koon led the offense with three hits apiece while Logsdon, Lynn and Dominic Castello each getting two.

Hunter Rotarius started the game and went five innings to earn the win.

He gave up two earned runs on four hits and struck out two.

In the second outing, Wesleyan made an early statement scoring seven runs in the first inning.

Wesleyan took advantage of four hits, two hit batsmen and two walks for their seven runs.

Chestnut Hill scored on in the bottom of the first to make it a 7-1 game.

Wesleyan scored a pair of runs in the top of the second to increase their lead to 9-1.

Chestnut Hill scored twice in the second, fourth and sixth to trim the Wesleyan lead to 9-7, but was never able to undertake the Bobcats.

Wesleyan had seven hits in the contest.

Bobby Ornes earned the win as he started the game and went five innings.

He gave up five earned runs on nine hits while striking out four.

Wesleyan will wrap up their spring break action Saturday when they play Chestnut Hill in another doubleheader starting at 9:30 a.m.
