Ryan Sawyers just finished his first season as the Pitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the Wesleyan baseball program.

The 2012 Bobcat pitching staff returned just two wins out of 26 from 2011, but Sawyers was able to help junior Aaron Adams and senior Warren Hammel to career seasons. Adams led the WVIAC in innings pitched (105), wins (10) and ERA among starters (2.41), meanwhile Hammel won his first nine decisions en route to a 9-2 campaign.    

Sawyers spent three seasons (2008-11) as the Pitching Coach at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. prior to returning to Wesleyan. While at Purdue, his pitching staffs led the Big Ten in strikeouts in 2010 and 2011. The 2010 team set the school record for strikeouts, while the 2011 staff tied the record for wins and broke the saves record.  He was also the Volunteer Assistant Coach at Purdue during the 2003-04 season.

Prior to Purdue, Sawyers spent three seasons (2005-08)as an assistant at Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kan. He also put in three seasons at Shepherd University (2000-03).  The Rams led the WVIAC in ERA in 2002 & 2003.  Both Garden City and Shepherd finished one game away from the World Series during Sawyers' tenure as pitching coach.

Sawyers spent two seasons at Allegany Community College (1996-97), before coming to Buckhannon where he would earn WVIAC Pitcher of the Year honors in 1999. He is the third member of his immediate family to pitch and graduate from Wesleyan.  His grandfather, Frank "Sawbuck" Sawyers '49 and his brother, Jake Sawyers '95 were also right-handed pitchers for the Bobcats.  He graduated from Wesleyan with a Bachelor’s degree in 2003 and received his Master’s from West Virginia University in 2008. The Rawlings, Md. native is married to the former Jamie Justice, the couple resides in Buckhannon with their son Brady and daughter Chelsea.
