George Shehl begins his second season as head football coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Shehl, 29, was hired on December 12, 2012. He comes to Wesleyan from the University of Charleston where he served as Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator from 2011-2012.
Prior to his two years in Charleston, Shehl served as the Defensive Graduate Assistant at West Virginia University under defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel and Head Coach Bill Stewart from 2008-2010. In his two years at WVU, the Mountaineers went 18-6 and played in two bowl games. (Mineke Car Care Bowl, Gator Bowl) He coached the 2010 season at Marshall and a defensive assistant.
Shehl began his career in 2006 at The Citadel in Charleston, SC where he was a quality control coach for the defensive and special teams units. The Citadel, under head coach Kevin Higgins, had their first winning season (7-4) since 1992. Shehl received a Master’s of Business Administration from The Citadel.
Shehl was a four year letterman (2002-2005) at West Virginia University under then head coach, Rich Rodriguez. As a player, he was a part of three Big East Championships (2003,2005,2005) four bowl games including a victory over the University of Georgia in the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl.
The Clarksburg, W. Va. native was a four sport standout at Robert C. Byrd high School. He was married to Ali Hewitt of Richwood, W. Va. on June 14, 2013.
