Matt Barnes is in his second season as the offensive coordinator for the Bobcats, and this season he also assumes the responsibilities of being the assistant head coach.
The 2011 season was a record shattering campaign and Barnes was at controls of one of the most prolific offenses in Division-II. He played a key role in the development of Wesleyan quarterback Adam Neugebauer, who led the nation in touchdown passes (40) and passing yards (4,111). Both numbers were school records, Neugebauer was named a second-team All-American and finished fifth in the Harlin Hill voting. Barnes also played a role in the record-setting 99-reception season for Jon Meadows. In all, Barnes’ offense set 15 school records in 2011.
Barnes returned to Wesleyan after spending the spring of 2011 at Tiffin University in Ohio. While at Tiffin, he worked as the Running Backs Coach for former Wesleyan Offensive Coordinator and current Tiffin University Head Coach, Gary Goff. In the fall of 2010, Barnes was the Running Backs Coach for former Wesleyan Head Coach Denny Creehan. It was during this year that the Bobcats exploded to a 9-2 season and nearly a playoff berth. Barnes helped tutor the offense and was instrumental in the success of two Bobcat running backs who received WVIAC All-Conference accolades.
Prior to Wesleyan, Barnes was the Running Backs coach at Delaware Valley College in Pennsylvania. During his stint at Delaware Valley, the Aggies garnered a 9-2 record as well as a Conference Championship. Furthermore, Barnes contributed to the achievement of two running backs at Delaware Valley as they both were named to the MAC All-Conference Team.
