California, Pa.—The Bobcat Men's Basketball team defeated the Vulcans of Cal-Pa. at the Convocation Center 76-61 in a non-conference tilt held Saturday afternoon. This is the second road win of the year for Wesleyan and improves their overall record to 3-4.
Wesleyan, who never trailed in the game, got out to an early start on behalf of seniors T.J. Thompson and Brett Ervin as they combined for 12 of the first 14 points for the 'Cats establishing a 14-4 lead. Thompson would lead all scorers on the day with 23 on 7-12 shooting while senior guard Ray Warren fell just shy of a triple-double collecting 11 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds. Wesleyan's astounding first half 9-17 shooting performance from three point land along with a 19-8 rebounding advantage in the first half would propel the 'Cats to a 37-19 halftime lead.
Despite a more aggressive, 42 point outburst by the Vulcans in the second half, it still was not enough to push past the clutch hot hands of the Bobcats. The team managed to go 10-11 from the free throw line icing any late attempt of a Cal comeback. Warren really shined adding 10 of his 11 in the second frame turning the ball over once while tallying five dishouts. The fourth Bobcat to reach double-digits besides Thompson, Ervin, and Warren was Chris Dewberry who continued his hot streak from behind the arc going 3-6, collecting 13 points in 24 minutes of action off the bench for Wesleyan. Ten Bobcats found the floor in the win over the Vulcans who were paced by Alonzo Murphy and his 13 points.
With the victory the 'Cats will return home this Thursday as they play host to the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise. Game time is slated for 7:30, following the Women's tilt.
