South Euclid, Ohio -- The Wesleyan Basketball teams were on the road Thursday evening as they traveled to South Euclid, Ohio, home of the Notre Dame(OH) Falcons where the Bobcat Men defeated the Falcons 90-80 while the Women came up just short 73-77. The victory for the Men improves them to 4-3 in the Mountain East Conference and also happens to be their first road win in the MEC for the 2013-14 campaign.
In the Women's contest the Bobcats held a 12 point lead at halftime that they saw slip away in a painful loss as guard Kacey Johnson lead all scorers with a season high 24 points on 6-14 shooting while knocking down 12-14 free throws. The sophomore guard had an even 12 in the first and second half, respectivley, while teammates Allie Browne and Brittany Williams also joined the double digit scoring column.
Notre Dame rallied and erupted with 51 second half points as three Lady Falcons scored over ten points in the period. The Falcons would claw back and take their first lead 73-71 on a Courtney Clark three pointer. From that the Bobcats could not recover never reclaiming the lead ultimately losing 77-73.
The Men's battle witnessed seniors T.J. Thompson and Brett Ervin along with freshman Aleksandar Djordjevic all score over 20 points. Thompson led the way with 27 banging down five three pointers while Ervin downed four of his own helping him on his way to 23 points. Freshman guard Djordjevic went 7-11 from the field but struggled from the free throw line going just 6-13 as he collected 20 points in the affair. A strong effort off the bench from Tanner McGrew earned him 16 points and 15 rebounds, tallying a double-double, in 30 minutes of action for the 'Cats.
Wesleyan took a five point advantage in to the locker room scoring 44 of their total 90 in the first half. Twenty-three of Thompson's 27 would come in the first half as he propelled the 'Cats to their lead at intermission. The second half the Falcons would get a constant dose of Ervin, Djordjevic, and McGrew as they all powered the Bobcats through any attempt at a Falcon comeback. Notre Dame (OH) would draw as close as 83-77 with 1:31 left in the game but five clutch Ervin free throws along with a McGrew layup would ice the victory for the Bobcatsat 90-80.
The win for the Men improves their record to 9-6, 4-3 MEC and the loss for the Women drops them to 2-9, 0-7 MEC. Both teams are back home in action Saturday as they host the West Liberty Hilltoppers. The Men's team is currently the #1 team in Division II in the country. The Women's tilt starts at 2:00pm and the Men will follow.
