Charleston, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan College Men's Basketball team was in action late Friday night at the Charelston Civic Center in Quarterfinal action verse the Fairmont State Falcons. The Falcons claimed the victory, 70-62, despite the Bobcats taking a two point lead, 29-27, at intermission.
It was the third time this season the two teams had met and all three times the Falcons were able to eek out the Bobcats, this time advancing to the Semi's of the Mountain East Conference tournament. Fairmont State would jump out early in the contest and claim leads as much as ten points in the early going but a relentless Bobcat team would fight back and a two point lead at the half. Tanner McGrew would lead the first half charge with seven points helping the Bobcats to a perfect 9-9 from the charity stripe.
A quick start for the Falcons after the Bobcats would close the first half on a 19-6 run, the Falcons would mount a run of their own jumping back out to a nine point lead, 61-52, midway through the second half but, again, the Bobcats would fight back getting as close as 61-60 before two Falcon free throws would extend it back to a three point lead. The Bobcats would miss two key free throws and the Falcons would capitalize with a 3 pointer extending the lead, to what would ultimately be, too much to overcome. The final tally would read 70-62 and the season for the 'Cats comes to an abrupt halt at 20-12.
For three Wesleyan seniors, this will be the last time they suit up in the Bobcat uniform. Ray Warren, T.J. Thompson, and Brett Ervin all hang up their college careers on this evening as the Bobcats succomb to the Falcons. Ervin would end up leading the Bobcats with 16 points on 4-7 shooting from deep.
