SHEPHERDSTOWN – It was close but no dice for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats in their Mountain East Conference clash against the Shepherd Rams Monday night.

Trailing 76-73 with two seconds remaining, Wesleyan's Soren Dossing unleased a three-pointer for the tie, but the ball didn't bounce the way the Bobcats had hoped as they wound up dropping a hard-fought battle.

The loss dropped the Bobcats of head coach Gary Nottingham to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain East Conference.

Shepherd improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the MEC.

Wesleyan jumped into a quick 5-0 lead after a Garrett Grantham three-pointer and a lay-up by Taylor Price.

Shepherd would reel off the next six points, but Chris Dewberry (pictured) uncorked back-to-back three-pointers, Tanner McGrew made a lay-up and Price went inside for two to give Wesleyan a 15-6 lead with 12:55 left in the first half.

Shepherd came right back with the next 13 points to take a 19-15 lead.

Ja'sahn Johnson made a lay-up and Austin Shell made two free throws to deadlock the game at 19-19 with 7:18 left in the first half.

Shepherd went into the intermission with a 32-28 lead.

Price and McGrew began the second half with a pair of free throws to tie the game again, this time at 32-32.

Wesleyan was finally able to overtake Shepherd in the second half after Dewberry uncorked a three-pointer to give the Bobcats a 50-49 lead.

Shell made a lay-up to increase the Wesleyan lead to 52-49, but Shepherd scored the next five for a 54-52 advantage with 8:06 remaining in the second half.

With Shepherd leading 59-58, Dewberry bombed in another trey to return the lead to Wesleyan at 61-59 with 5:47 left.

Morgan McDonald though made a three for Shepherd to give the Rams a 62-61 advantage and it was a lead Shepherd would never give up.

The Rams outscored Wesleyan by an 8-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 70-63 lead.

Down 72-66 with 28 seconds remaining, Dewberry nailed a huge three-pointer to bring Wesleyan to within one at 72-69.

A.J. Carr made a free throw for Shepherd, but Aleksandar Djordjevic put in a lay-up to make it a 73-71 game with 16 seconds left.

The two teams traded free throws to make it 75-73 before Shepherd's Skyler Roman made one of two at the line to make it a 76-73 game before Dossing came up just short at the buzzer with this three-pointer.

Dewberry led all scorers with 20 points while Djordjevic had 13, Price had 12 and Shell scored 10.

McGrew scored eight points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

Wesleyan was 23 of 56 from the floor for a 42.6 shooting percentage.

The 'Cats will return to action this Saturday when they host Lake Erie in a non-conference game at 2 p.m.
