BUCKHANNON – Tanner McGrew (pictured) had a huge game for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats as he led his squad to a 61-48 win over the Shaw University Bears in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon at Rockefeller Center.
The senior forward had 19 points and 16 rebounds. He was three-for-six from the floor and a red-hot 13-for-14 at the line for his 19 points.
Wesleyan played without the services of leading scorer Chris Dewberry who was out with an injury. The junior guard is averaging 15.9 points per game.
Anthony Richards also stepped up big for the Bobcats coming off the bench. The freshman guard scored 17 points, going five-for seven beyond the three-point stripe.
Senior forward Taylor Price was the other Bobcat to reach double-digits as he scored 13 points.
Wesleyan trailed early by a 4-2 score but ran off the next 10 points for a 12-4 lead.
Shaw would tie the game at 14-14, but Wesleyan went on an 8-0 run scoring all eight points at the free-throw line to take a 22-14 lead.
Richards closed out the first half with a three-pointer to give Wesleyan a 25-19 advantage at the intermission.
Wesleyan led by a 36-31 score with nine minutes gone when things began to get chippy between the two teams
Ali Baba Odd made a lay-up for Shaw and was fouled on the play.
The aftermath of the play was three technical fouls and an ejection. Joe Reid for Shaw picked up two technicals and was tossed from the game. Welty was assessed a technical foul for Wesleyan.
McGrew made the two technical free throws for Wesleyan and Odd made the free throw on the foul on his lay-up to make it a 38-34 game in favor of the Bobcats.
Odd finished a 9-4 run for Shaw with a three-pointer to give the Bears their first and only lead in the second half at 43-42 with 7:49 remaining.
It would be a short-lived lead for Shaw as Richards drained a three to put Wesleyan back in the lead at 45-43.
With the game tied at 47-47, Richards fired in a three-pointer for Wesleyan that was the beginning of end for Shaw with 2:17 left.
Wesleyan would outscore Shaw in the final 2:17 on a 14-1 run.
The game had a crazy finish to it. With Wesleyan leading 59-48, Shaw's junior guard Jamar Cooper unleashed a pass directly at the side referee. Cooper was whistled for a technical foul and was ejected from the game.
McGrew would pop in both free throws to wrap up the scoring.
Wesleyan shot 38.6 percent from the floor making good on 17 of their 44 shots.
They were an impressive 84.6 percent from the free throw line as they made good on 22 of their 26 attempts.
Shaw outrebounded Wesleyan by a 32-29 margin.
Shaw shot 37.0 percent from the floor nailing 17 of their 46 shots.
Odd led the team with 12 points while Koron Reed had 10.
Shaw dropped to 5-5 overall
Wesleyan improved to 3-7 overall.
The Bobcats will return to action Saturday, Jan. 3 when they travel to Charleston for a Mountain East Conference contest.
Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
