URBANA (Ohio) – Garrett Grantham (pictured) had a career day for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats as he led them to a 73-64 road win over the Urbana Blue Knights here today in a Mountain East Conference contest.
The junior guard from Shepherdstown, W. Va. scored a season-high 30 points, dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds as Wesleyan won for the fourth time in their last five games.
The 30 points scored is an individual high for Wesleyan this season.
The win upped Gary Nottingham's team to 7-9 overall and 5-5 in the MEC.
Ahead early by a 9-7 score, Tanner McGrew downed to free throws and Grantham fired in a three-pointer to give Wesleyan a 14-7 advantage with 12:28 showing on the first-quarter clock.
After Urbana scored the next five points, Aleksandar Djordjevic unleashed a trey to put Wesleyan ahead by five, at 17-12, at the 9:09 mark.
Wesleyan would endure a five-minute scoring drought as Urbana rattled off the next 10 points for a 22-17 lead with 5:24 left in the half.
Grantham ended the run with a jumper, came back with a three-pointer and Taylor Price darted inside for a lay-up to cap a 7-0 run for Wesleyan that gave them the lead back at 24-22 with 1:43 left in the opening half.
Wesleyan went into the intermission with a 26-24 advantage.
The Bobcats never gave up the lead in the second half.
Wesleyan's largest lead was 12 points (54-42) following a Ja'Sahn Johnson lay-up at the 7:04 mark.
Urbana went on a 15-4 run to close the game to a one-point contest, at 58-57, with 3:22 remaining but Grantham made a lay-up and downed a free throw after being fouled to extend the Bobcat lead to 61-57.
Wesleyan secured the game going a perfect six-for-six at the free throw line during the final 20 seconds of the contest.
Wesleyan shot the ball at 49 percent hitting on 25 of their 51 shots.
Johnson added 10 points and five rebounds.
McGrew came up just a point short of another double-double as he scored nine points and had 12 rebounds.
Mike Newton scored 18 points to lead Urbana.
Urbana dropped to 4-12 overall and 1-9 in the MEC.
Wesleyan will return to action Thursday when they host Glenville State in a MEC tilt.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
