BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats were stunned in their home opener as the Davis & Elkins Senators escaped Rockefeller Center with an 82-75 victory in non-conference action.
The loss dropped Wesleyan to 4-2 on the season while Davis & Elkins improved to 2-4.
Tanner McGrew started the scoring with lay-up, and after Jordan Mcelveen scored for the Senators, Chris Dewberry made a jumper and McGrew scored from inside the paint to treat Wesleyan to an early 6-2 advantage with two minutes ticked off the clock.
D&E outscored Wesleyan over the next three minute by a 12-2 score to take a 14-8 lead and held on to their lead, at 21-18, with 11:07 showing on the first-half clock.
Wesleyan went on a 9-0 run to take a 27-21 lead.
With the game tied at 32-32 with a minute left in the first half, McGrew made a lay-up to end the first-half scoring to treat Wesleyan to a 34-32 intermission lead.
Davis & Elkins scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 39-34 lead and it was a lead they would never relinquish.
A Garrett Grantham three-pointer deadlocked the game at 45-45 with 13:16 showing on the second-half clock.
Down 51-47, Grantham darted inside for a lay-up to bring Wesleyan to within two, at 51-49.
Davis & Elkins scored the next six to open up a 57-49 advantage with 7:20 left.
The Senators owned their biggest lead of the game with two minutes remaining when they went up by 13, at 74-61.
Wesleyan hit four three-points in the final two minutes to close the final margin to seven.
McGrew led Wesleyan with another double-double scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
Dewberry tallied 18 points as well in just 21 minutes of action after getting in foul trouble early in the first half.
Fred Brondsted added 17 points while Grantham put in 11.
Wesleyan shot 42 percent from the floor hitting on 28 of their 67 shots.
Wesleyan will return to action this Thursday when they travel to UVa.-Wise. Tip-off for the Mountain East Conference game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
