WISE, Va. – Tanner McGrew had a game for the ages as he led the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats to an 82-64 road victory over the UVa.-Wise Cavaliers tonight in a Mountain East Conference clash.
The senior forward from Buckhannon scored a game-high 37 points and hauled in 19 rebounds as Wesleyan improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the MEC.
McGrew opened the scoring with a jumper and Fred Brondsted drilled home a three-pointer to treat Wesleyan to a 5-0 lead and the Bobcats were off and running in a game they never trailed.
Wesleyan built their largest lead in the first half to 14 when Soren Dossing nailed a three-pointer to give the 'Cats a 40-26 advantage with 1:45 left in the opening half.
The Bobcats went into the intermission up by 13, at 42-29.
A McGrew tip-in pushed Wesleyan's lead to 16, at 50-34, with 2:29 clicked off the second-half clock.
Up 50-37, Wesleyan went on an 11-0 run to take a 24-point lead, at 61-37, with 13:18 showing on the clock.
The Cavaliers went on a 19-3 run to close the gap to eight, at 64-56, with 8:25 left in the game.
But Wesleyan took control of the game the rest of the way outscoring UVa.-Wise by an 18-8 margin during the five eight minutes.
Brondsted added 23 points in the victory.
Dossing added nine and Mo Berchie came off the bench to score seven points.
Wesleyan shot 51.6 percent hitting on 32 of their 52 shots.
The 'Cats owned a 46-27 advantage in rebounding.
Wesleyan will return to action this Saturday when they visit Concord for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
