'Cats Win Instant Classic Over Concord in 3OTs, 90-89

ATHENS – An absolute classic is the only way to describe the game between the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats and the Concord Mt. Lions today in Mountain East Conference action.

In three overtimes, Wesleyan outlasted Concord by a 90-89 score.

It was a battle of MEC heavyweights as Concord entered the game with a perfect 7-0 record while the Bobcats entered the contest with a 5-2 mark.

Wesleyan had to score a game-tying basket in regulation and the first two overtimes to secure the victory.

Concord started quickly as they grabbed an early 10-point lead, at 22-12, with 10 minutes clicked off the first-half clock.

Wesleyan outscored Concord in the final 10 minutes of the first half by a 17-10 margin and trailed by just three at the break, 32-29.

The 'Cats were down by five, 64-59, with a minute to go in regulation.

Tanner McGrew made a lay-up with 51 seconds left to make it a 64-61 game.

Following a miss by Concord, Fred Brondsted's three-pointer was off the mark, but Mo Berchie grabbed the offensive rebound and the Bobcats moved the ball to Soren Dossing (pictured) who drained a three-pointer with six seconds left.

Michael Sanchez missed a lay-up at the buzzer for Concord as both teams went into the first overtime tied at 64-64.

In the first overtime, Sanchez put Concord up 74-72 after nailing a three-pointer with 14 seconds remaining.

This time it was Berchie who was the hero as he scored a game-tying lay-up with eight seconds left to deadlock the game at 74-74.

Rob Reed missed a three-pointer for Concord at the buzzer.

Wesleyan found themselves down 85-83 in the second overtime with 18 seconds remaining.

Garrett Grantham made the tying shot this time as he scored on a lay-up with two seconds left forcing a third overtime with the game tied at 85-85.

Berchie gave Wesleyan the lead in the third overtime period with a jumper at the 4:11 mark.

The two teams went scoreless over the next two minutes before Concord's Jametrius Wade made a lay-up at with 2:03 remaining to even the game at 87-87.

Following another two-minute drought by both teams, Grantham launched in a three-pointer to give Wesleyan a 90-87 lead with 21 seconds left.

Aaron Miller scored a lay-up for Concord, but the Mt. Lions ran 13 seconds off the clock with it showing just eight seconds remaining.

Concord fouled Tanner McGrew who missed his foul shot, but Reed's three pointer with two seconds left was no good as Wesleyan secured the one-point win.

McGrew led Wesleyan with 27 points and 24 rebounds. It was his fifth double-double of the year.

Berchie added 26 points while Dossing came off the bench to score 18.

Grantham tacked on 15 points for the Bobcats.

Wesleyan owned a 43-40 margin in rebounding.

The Bobcats shot 49 percent from the floor as they hit 35 of their 72 shots.

Wesleyan improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the MEC.

Concord dropped to 7-1 over and 3-1 in the MEC.

Wesleyan will return to action next Wednesday when they host Shawnee State.

Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
