Basketball 'Cats Earn 69-55 Victory over Shawnee State

BUCKHANNONTanner McGrew had his sixth double-double of the season scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds and Garrett Grantham (pictured) added 17 points and three rebounds as the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats rolled to a 69-55 non-conference victory over the Shawnee State University Bears today in Rockefeller Center.

The two teams traded the lead back-and-fourth early on.

Shawnee State led 6-5, but McGrew sank two free throws and Grantham fired in a trey to give Wesleyan a 10-6 advantage at the 15:45 mark. It was a lead the Bobcats would never relinquish.

A Chris Dewberry three-pointer at the 7:15 mark of the first half gave Wesleyan their biggest lead of the game, at 15, at 29-14.

In the final seven minutes of the first half, Wesleyan managed just one basket, a short jumper by McGrew.

Shawnee State closed the first half on a 12-2 run to trim Wesleyan's lead to five, at 31-26.

Wesleyan scored the first six points of the second half as McGrew drained two free throws, Grantham darted inside for a lay-up and Fred Brondsted unleashed a three-pointer as the Bobcats opened up a 38-26 lead.

A McGrew lay-up kept Wesleyan ahead by 12 at the 8:02 mark at 52-40.

Shawnee State scored four straight points to close it to eight, at 52-44, with 6:41 left but couldn't get any closer.

Wesleyan ended the game on a 17-11 run for their 14-point victory.

Dewberry and Ja'Sahn Johnson both scored nine points while Mo Berchie added five.

Berchie also had a game high seven assists.

Shawnee State fell to 6-7 on the season.

Wesleyan improved to 7-2 overall.

They will close out the 2015 portion of their schedule this Saturday when they host Bluefield State at 2 p.m.
