MILLERSVILLE (Pa.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat soccer team scored first but was unable to hold an early lead as they dropped a 3-2 decision to Millersville today in non-conference action.
Freshman Matthew Bentley scored after playing a through ball from the middle of the field with 19:23 ticked off the first-half clock to give Wesleyan a 1-0 lead.
Paul Smith was credited with the assist.
Millersville's Nicholas Leinbach scored at the 33-minute mark to even the game at 1-1.
The 1-1 score held at the intermission.
Christopher Sosa gave Millersville their first lead in the 71st minute with an unassisted goal and then just five minutes later, Kyle Finsterbush scored an unassisted goal to put the host up by a 3-1 score.
Josh Spencer played a ball that was deflected to the left corner and found the back of the net with 10 minutes remaining to bring Wesleyan to within one, at 3-2.
Dominic Okus had the assist on the goal.
Wesleyan was unable to score the game-tying goal in the final 10 minutes of action.
The Bobcats owned a 14-12 lead in shots and an 8-6 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Bobcat keeper Alessandro Armenia turned away three shots.
Millersville improved to 2-0 on the season while Wesleyan dropped to 0-2.
The Bobcats will return to action Friday night when they open their Mountain East Conference schedule at home against Notre Dame.
The game will begin at 7 p.m.
