Bobcats Await Selection Show for NCAA Fate
BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The West VIrginia Wesleyan men's tennis team will learn their NCAA tournament plans tonight, as the national selection show announces the Atlantic regional pairings at 8:30pm EST. The top two teams in the Atlantic region will serve as the hosts for regional sites, and the regional winners will adavnce to Surprize, AZ for the Sweet 16.
The Bobcats (11-5, 7-3) were ranked third in last week's regional rankings, before a semifinal showing at the WVIAC tournament this past weekend. The 'Cats dropped a 6 hour, 5-4 decision to #2 ranked University of Charleston after turning back Davis and Elkins in the first round. Bluefield State defeated UC in the championship match to claim their second consecutive WVIAC title and the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
Wesleyan now awaits the at-large selections in the show tonight to determine if they will be going to their 9th consecutive tournament.
Last season, the Bobcats advanced to the round of 32 before losing to host Bluefield State. 7 teams from the Atlantic region will advance to the tournament field of 56, made up from the WVIAC, PSAC, and CIAA conference members. BSU, UC, WVWC, Shepherd, West Liberty, Davis & Elkins, and Concord are all under consideration to earn a bid into this year's NCAA field.
Wesleyan is led by All-WVIAC performer Javier Yim Kim, and fellow senior Eduards Gusevs. The duo has been part of three consecutive NCAA qualifying teams, and was on Wesleyan's last team to reach the "Sweet 16" in 2009.
