BUCKHANNON — Construction is underway for six new tennis courts at West Virginia Wesleyan College. The courts will be located adjacent to Culpepper Soccer Stadium and Culpepper Softball Field. Construction is expected to be completed by this fall.
The $500,000 project has been made possible by several generous gifts from alumni and friends. Three of the six courts have been named through leadership gifts by Jack '59 and Mary Sue Fraser '60, Don '70 and Debra Green '74, and Marc, Hon. 16 and Debora Halbritter.
Wesleyan's men's and women's tennis teams have been without a suitable playable outdoor home facility since 2013. Despite the adversity, the men's team won the 2016 Mountain East Conference regular-season championship and earned a 10th consecutive berth into the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. They finished the year with a 19-6 record.
"This is an exciting time for the tennis team and the community," remarked West Virginia Wesleyan College head tennis coach Marc Walters. "The players on our men's and women's teams have been looking forward to this project for three years. For our seniors, it will be their first chance to play matches on campus in their career."
When construction is completed, the courts will also feature a lighted-laying surface. In addition to seeking leadership gifts for the remaining three courts, the Wesleyan Advancement Office is also seeking gift support for windscreens and additional seating.
