Tennis 'Cats Seventh in Initial ITA Spring Rankings

Tempe, AZ -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has released the initial spring rankings and the Mountain East Conference is well represented in the poll.

No fewer than four MEC teams made the initial ranking, led by upstart Fairmont State University, who jumped six places from the fall ranking after upsetting Edinboro last weekend. The Fighting Falcons are fourth in this ranking period.

Defending MEC tournament champion West Liberty comes in at sixth, while West Virginia Wesleyan (7) and Charleston (8) all also are ranked among the top 10 teams in the Atlantic Region.

The Bobcats (2-0, 0-0 MEC) dropped one spot from the fall as FSU jumped ahead of the pack.

Independent Bluefield State College leads tops the list while Chowan of the CIAA conference moves up to the second spot. The Big Blues, ranked at #41 nationally in the fall ITA poll, have been to seven consecutive NCAA Sweet 16s and continue to be a national level program under head coach Louis Belt.

Mercyhurst (3), Edinboro (5), and West Chester (9) represent the PSAC conference. Edinboro was the Atlantic Region's other Sweet 16 qualifier last year, and came into this spring with a #47 national ranking.

"We have a pretty interesting region this year," said head coach Marc Walters, who is in his fourth year of service on the ITA Regional ranking committee. "Mercyhurst, Edinboro, Bluefield, and our program have all been the NCAA Sweet 16 over the past three years, so it looks like anyone in the top eight has a real shot at making it through."

The ITA ranks member teams in each of the eight designated NCAA regions, then compiles a list of ranked nationally programs from these regional polls.

"The neighborhood is getting crowded," observed Walters, "The conference is wide open now that Fairmont State has thrown their hat in the ring. Everyone in the region now plays just about everyone else, so we should be able to sort things out over the next two months both within the region as well as nationally."

The next ranking will be March 15, at which time regional singles and doubles ratings will also be included along with the team list.
