BUCKHANNON – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced recently its academic awards for the 2015-16 NCAA DII Track & Field season - including All-Academic and Scholar of the Year awards – and both the West Virginia Wesleyan men and women's programs and two individual performers were honored.
A total of 117 women's teams and 66 men's teams earned the distinction as a result of earning a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or higher.
Sioux Falls was the top men's team in D-II this academic year with a 3.56 team GPA, ahead Bentley at 3.42 and Maryville (Mo.) at 3.41.
The West Virginia Wesleyan men's program finished 38th nationally with a 3.09 GPA.
On the women's side, with a cumulative team GPA of 3.75, the women of Maryville (Mo.) led all NCAA D-II programs for the second consecutive season.
The Lady Bobcat program was 30th in the nation with an impressive 3.41 GPA.
Dailey was a performer in the 110-meter hurdles and high jump while Cvechko was a stand-out in the heptathlon, long jump, high jump, shot put and 100-meter hurdles.
Scholar Athletes of the Year were selected as the highest-finishing performers at the NCAA Indoor & Outdoor Championships who also achieved USTFCCCA All-Academic Individual status.
"I am very proud every time we are able to get some student-athletes on these teams," remarked head coach Jesse Skiles. ""It is very tough to do this. You have to be nationally ranked with an NCAA provisional and you also have to maintain a high performance level in the classroom.
Dailey, a rising senior from Ona, W. Va., owns a 3.52 GPA while Cvechko, also a rising senior from Buckhannon, W. Va., has a 3.53 GPA.
"Niles hit an indoor provisional and Lauren did both indoor and outdoor," Skiles remarked. "On top of getting the Mountain East Conference MVP, this academic honor is a nice cap for an amazing year for Lauren."
