Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams Earn All-Academic Honors

BUCKHANNON – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced today its academic team awards for the 2016-17 NCAA DII Track & Field season and both the West Virginia Wesleyan men and women's programs were honored.

A total of 115 women's teams and 76 men's teams earned the distinction of being a USTFCCCA All-Academic team as a result of earning a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or higher.

Drury University was the top men's team in D-II this academic year with a 3.46 team GPA, ahead of second-place Bentley at 3.44.

The West Virginia Wesleyan men's program came in nationally with a 3.09 GPA.

The GPA was the highest in the Mountain East Conference.

On the women's side, with a cumulative team GPA of 3.86, the women of California Baptist University led all NCAA D-II programs. Cedarville University was second with a 3.63.

The Lady Bobcat program posted a national GPA of 3.37.

Like the men, the women had the highest GPA in the Mountain East Conference.

"I am very proud of this accomplishment," remarked outgoing head coach Jesse Skiles. "Our teams carried on a long tradition of academic excellence for the Bobcat track and field programs.

"It is also important to note, that we accomplished this total GPA and Academic All-America Honor with the largest teams in the league on both sides. I feel that makes this even more impressive. I am very proud of the academic culture that has been cultivated here and I also want to give credit to the outstanding faculty here at WVWC. They really push our student-athletes."
