BUCKHANNON – Senior third baseman Ashley Hurey (pictured) hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the 13th-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats a sweep over UVa.-Wise today in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader.
With the game scoreless heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Hurey took a pitch over the left field fence to give Wesleyan a 1-0 victory.
The Lady 'Cats took the first game by a 5-3 score.
The two wins gave head coach Steve Warner and his squad a 23-3 record overall and a 5-1 mark in the MEC.
In the second contest, Wesleyan outhit UVa.-Wise by an 8-2 margin but wasn't able to string together enough hits to score a run prior to Hurey's heroics.
Wesleyan did have chances in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Lady 'Cats has runners at second and third in the fifth inning and first and third in the sixth inning but was unable to chase across a run.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Hurey won the game with her third home run of the season.
Anna Eggleston and Hurey each had two hits for the Lady 'Cats.
Sayaka Foley was wonderful in the circle as she allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out 10 in a complete-game effort.
She upped her record to 7-1.
Krista Waggoner had a one-run single in the bottom of the third to treat Wesleyan to a 3-0 advantage.
UVa.-Wise deadlocked the game in the bottom of the fifth when Olivia Cleary hit a three-run home run.
Eggleston had the game-winning hit for the Lady 'Cats in the bottom of the sixth inning when she hit a two-run single to give Wesleyan its 5-3 lead.
Wesleyan had nine hits in the game with Eggleston and Waggoner each getting two apiece.
Hannah Vet went the distance for Wesleyan to up her record to 8-1.
She allowed three earned runs on three hits and struck out seven.
Wesleyan will return to action this Friday when they host Notre Dame College in a MEC doubleheader.
The first pitch will be at 3 p.m.
