URBANA (Ohio) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats put four players in double digits and had two players record double-doubles, but they were not able to overcome the Urbana Blue Knights this evening in a Mountain East Conference outing.
Playing for the first time in two weeks after the holiday break, the Lady 'Cats dropped a 77-65 decision.
Wesleyan raced out to a 13-6 lead after an old-fashioned three-point play by Vandertoolen with 5:40 left in the opening quarter.
Urbana went on a 10-2 run to take a 16-15 lead with 3:41 showing on the first-quarter clock.
Wesleyan's Alexa Mortenson made a jumper with 27 seconds left in the opening quarter to deadlock the game at 19-19.
In the first minute of the second quarter, Urbana opened up a 26-22 lead after a 7-3 run.
Wesleyan was forced to play catch-up the rest of the quarter.
A Long jumper with 22 seconds remaining in the half brought Wesleyan to within one, at 35-34, but Urbana's Jennifer Alflen made a basket to end the half and give the Blue Knights a 37-34 lead at the break.
Wesleyan fell behind by a 45-36 score five minutes into the third quarter but Long nailed a jumper and then two free throws to make it a 45-40 score.
Following an Urbana basket at the four-minute mark, Long made another jumper, Goldman hit a 12-footer and Remer popped in a jumper in the paint to narrow the difference to one, at 47-46, with 2:44 remaining in the third quarter.
Urbana though closed the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 58-48 lead heading into the final quarter.
Wesleyan never got closer than eight points to Urbana in the final quarter.
The Lady Bobcats shot 38.4 percent from the floor (28-for-73) and was just 1-of-12 shooting three-pointers.
Wesleyan outrebounded Urbana by a 42-40 margin.
The loss dropped Wesleyan to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the MEC.
Urbana improved to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the MEC.
Wesleyan will play again Wednesday as they stay on the road for a league game with Notre Dame.
The game will tip at 5:30 p.m.
