Lady 'Cats Can't Overcome Slow Start Against  Redhawks

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan lacrosse team couldn't overcome an early six-goal deficit as their two-game winning streak came to an end with a 15-9 setback to the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks today in a non-conference clash at Ross Field.

Roberts Wesleyan scored their six goals in the first 13 minutes of the opening half.

The Lady Bobcats finally got on the scoreboard at the 16:27 mark when Natalie Schaffner (pictured) scored a goal with the assist going to Katie Kennedy.

Just little over a minute later, Kim Lubic scored an unassisted goal to make it a 6-2 game.

Loren Dunn scored for Roberts Wesleyan at the 12:03 mark to increase the Roberts Wesleyan lead to 7-2.

Nearly seven minutes would tick off the clock before another score.

Lubic scored on a free position shot, and after a Roberts Wesleyan goal, Schaffner scored again to make it an 8-4 contest.

Ali Fox scored the final two goals of the half as Roberts Wesleyan took a 10-4 lead into the break.

Wesleyan scored three of the first five goals in the second half as Caitlyn Baicar, Lubic and Hannah Antonelli found the back of the net.

That cut the lead to five, at 12-7.

Roberts Wesleyan scored the next two goals to open up their biggest lead, at seven, at 14-7, with 8:31 left in the game.

Schaffner and Madison Duvall scored consecutive goals on free position shots to close the margin to 14-9 for Wesleyan.

Cassley Jackowski scored the game's final goal with five seconds left for Roberts Wesleyan to wrap up the scoring.

Roberts Wesleyan owned a 26-20 advantage in shots and a 23-16 lead in shots-on-goal.

The Lady Bobcats won 17 of the 26 draw controls.

The loss drops the Lady Bobcats to 3-5 overall.

They will begin MEC play this Friday when they travel to Notre Dame College.

The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
