HUNTINGTON -- Both of the higher seeded teams advanced in the quarterfinals of the Mountain East Conference Tennis Tournament on Friday as West Liberty and West Virginia Welseyan earned victores.
The fourth-seeded Hilltoppers defeated fifth-seeded UVa.-Wise, 5-2, and the third-seeded Lady Bobcats got past sixth-seeded Shepherd, 5-1.
West Liberty will now take on top-seeded West Virginia State tomorrow at 11 a.m., while the Lady Bobcats move on to take on Charleston at 2 p.m.
The Hilltoppers trailed early in the match as the Cavaliers won two of the three doubles matches. West Liberty took over in singles, though, with Raquel Cabero, Laura Huwe, Andrea Puga and Kate Pinchuk all earning victories.
In the second match of the day, Shepherd managed a win at No. 2 doubles, but it was all West Virginia Wesleyan after that.
The Lady Bobcats finished doubles up 2-1, and then breezed through singles winning at the top three positions winning in straight sets in each. MEC Freshman of the Year Rebekka Heigermoser won at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles teaming with Paula Pimenta, who also won her match at No. 2 singles.
