Lady 'Cats Come Up Just Short Against Point Park, 3-2

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team pushed Point Park to five sets here Tuesday night in a non-conference outing, but came up just short in a 3-2 defeat at Rockefeller Center.

Wesleyan won the first set by a 25-19 score but dropped a hard-fought second set 30-28 and a close 25-19 third set. They rebounded to claim the fourth set 25-17 but fell in the fifth and deciding set, 15-10.

The Lady Bobcats trailed early in the first set by a 6- 3 score but took 19 of the next 26 points for a 22-13 lead.

Up 24-19, an attack error by Point Park gave Wesleyan the 25-19 win.

In the second set, Wesleyan was at match point at 24-21, but Point Park reeled off the next four points to take a 25-24 lead and they would eventually take the second set 30-28.

An Ashton King kill gave Wesleyan a 1-0 lead in the third set, but it was the only lead the Lady 'Cats would have.

Point Park raced out to a 7-2 advantage and near looked back as they took the third set by six.

Wesleyan started fast in the fourth set getting out a 5-0 lead. It was a lead they wouldn't relinquish as they cruised to an eight-point victory.

The Lady 'Cats never led the final set.

They fell behind early 5-1, and a kill by Stacie Baumann brought Wesleyan to within two at 11-9, but Point Park closed out the contest taking four of the next five points.

Baumann led Wesleyan with 15 kills on the night.

Paulina Nottingham had a team-high 34 assists while Kirsty Lawrence had 31 digs.

Wesleyan, now 1-8 on the season, will return to action this Saturday at Salem International with a pair of matches.

They will play Kentucky Wesleyan at noon and then Salem International at 3 p.m.
