BUCKHANNON – West Virginia Wesleyan College Director of Athletic Randy Tenney is pleased to announce the hiring of Nancy Wheeler as the new head coach of the Lady Bobcat volleyball team.
Tenney remarked about Wheeler hiring, "I think Nancy is a perfect choice to lead our volleyball team. She has had tremendous success at Penn State Fayette and I think she is the right person to lead our volleyball team to greatness. She brings great knowledge and leadership to the head coaching position here at Wesleyan."
Wheeler, who turned the Penn State Fayette campus into a juggernaut during her nine years as head coach there, hopes to accomplish that same feat at Wesleyan.
"I am super thrilled and so blessed", Wheeler said of taking on an NCAA Division II program. "I want to embrace this and give it everything I have."
Wheeler certainly gave a lot to the Roaring Lions, as in eight PSUAC titles in nine seasons, including seven in a row and over 300 conference wins.
"This program has only lost three conference matches in nine years" Wheeler said. "When I look back, I guess I'll always remember winning the championships at Rec Hall up at Penn State main campus. That was definitely a highlight. Playing at the National Tournament at Virginia Beach this past season was a great experience also."
Some other accolades for Wheeler include: eight-time PSUAC coach of the year, produced six USCAA All-American players, produced several dozen All-Conference First Team players, including Player of the Year for six years, an earned birth to the USCAA National championship in eight of her nine seasons.
Wheeler is a native of Uniontown, Pa. and is a graduate of California (Pa.) University where she earned a degree in Education.
Wheeler said she had a good feeling about Wesleyan during her interview process.
"I felt very positive after going through the interview process at Wesleyan," she said. "The best portion of the process was meeting a body of current players and the athletic trainer, they impressed me with their passion about seeking the right person for a coach, and I am very honored and humbled that they felt I was the perfect fit. The other thing that impressed me, their team GPA is a 3.3, so they are very strong athletically, as well as academically."
The Lady Bobcats were 11-21 overall and 5-11 in the Mountain East Conference during the 2016 season.
Wheeler remarked, "In moving forward, my goals are set for WVWC, "WIN." I have high expectations for the up-coming season, the players are all on board for improvement and success, and I am excited for the challenge to bring Wesleyan up to a championship program."
Wheeler says her life has been about volleyball, who has over 20 years of coaching at the club, high school and collegiate level.
"Volleyball has shaped my entire life, from my college playing days through my coaching career," she remarked. "I met my husband through volleyball and my children all play the sport too. As I look back on my career I see the hand of God over my life through this wonderful sport. I am very excited to be a Bobcat and I look forward to working with each player to become the best program that we can be. My new favorite color is "ORANGE"!! GO BOBCATS!!!"
Nancy is married to Rod Wheeler and the couple has three daughters, Mackenzie (18), Madison (15) and Morgan (12).
