SOUTH EUCLID (Ohio) – The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team dropped a pair of matches in day two of the Notre Dame Invitational Tournament at Murphy Gymnasium.
Wesleyan dropped a 3-0 decision to Indiana (Pa.) and the narrowly lost a 3-2 verdict to Mercyhurst (Pa.).
Coach Nancy Wheeler's Lady Bobcats dropped the day's opener to Indiana (Pa.) – 25-15, 25-15 and 25-14.
Game two of the day for the Lady Bobcats was a marathon five-set slugfest with Mercyhurst.
The two teams battled for 220 total points before the Lakers finally prevailed over the Wesleyan squad – 25-20, 30-32, 22-25, 25-17 and 15-9.
Wheeler's troops put themselves into a good position, pulling out the tight third set to gain a 2-1 advantage. But the Lakers battled back with the fourth set victory, and carried that momentum into the decisive fifth set.
In a match loaded with big stats, several Lady Bobcats put up some big numbers.
Three different players recorded double figures in kills -- Hannah King with 12 while Doyle and Hicks each had 10.
Setter Wheeler registered 27 assists while Hannah Jones had 15.
Leah Blend had a team high seven blocks.
Wesleyan fell to 2-9 overall.
They return to action Wednesday night for their first home match, hosting Bluefield State in a non-conference affair at 6 p.m.
